As 1st Assistant Art Director for season 3 of Surreal Estate, I produced graphics for a wide variety of applications. This included key graphics and branding such as the Roman Ireland rebrand and The Tell-Tale Heart, hero props such as the Cowboy Rick drawing and Edward Cheever portrait, set dec graphics for many different locations, laptop playback sequences and more. I’ll be updating this space as the season airs!
Project Highlights
Roman Ireland Agency
Branding Design
Season 3 of Surreal Estate saw the launch of the Roman/Ireland Agency, (formerly The Roman Agency) and so we needed a fresh new brand strategy for the agency’s signage, business cards, flyers and office interiors. A typographic logo was decided upon, so it was my challenge to design one that felt right for a company that doubles as a slick, professional real estate agency and paranormal buster of assorted wraiths. This brand identity is what we came up with, along with business cards, real estate signage, flyers and paperwork.
Edward Cheever Portrait
Hero Prop
Episode 1 opens with a ghost story centered around a chimney and a 1920s portrait. The man in the portrait needed to look distinguished, business-like, and with the potential for great cruelty. I achieved this oil painting style by using a photo reference and digitally painting overtop.
Cowboy Rick
Illustration
Episode 1 also sees the storyline of Cowboy Rick, a specter haunting the dreams of a young boy. As the episode progresses, the boy’s obsession grows, resulting in a chilling series of drawings. Our team drew a wide array of Cowboy Ricks for set dec, so that they could be used a lot or a little, as needed. The drawing which the production ultimately selected to feature was one of mine.
The Tell-Tale Heart
Branding, Signage, Set Dec
Season 3 also saw the Roman Ireland gang hanging out at a bar called The Tell-Tale Heart, a gothic and Poe-inspired name that needed a logo design to match. I created this shattered heart design, and as a team we put together a collection of gothic and referential imagery for the interior.
The Yurth Group
Logo Design/Branding
The Yurth Group was an interesting challenge. While simple, it needed to be both sophisticated enough to work as an accounting firm logo, and rustic enough for a red hot brand. The process of creating the brand itself presented its own challenges, but I worked with my art director to determine the level of detail we could achieve and designed the logo to these specifications.
ASDRA
Branding and Marketing Materials
The production needed an updated logo for ASDRA, and for set dec, we wanted to do a series of prints with a borderline satirical edge to them. This is a defence company with far reaching applications, from war to oil to mass surveillance, and we thought their posters should reflect that – so we imagined what an evil defence company’s marketing would look like in real life.
